Handler, A tale of snakes and redemption

Fresno City College Theatre Department presents Handler, a drama by
Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Robert Schenkkan, March 9-17 in the
Fresno City College Theatre.  Charles Erven will direct.  Handler will
be performed March 9, 10, 14,15,16,17 at 7:30p.m. and March 10, 11*, 17
at 2:00 p.m.  The March 11 performance is a special scholarship
performance.

 

Admission is $10 general and $7 student/seniors.  Call the FCC Theatre
Box Office at 442-8221 for ticket information. Handler contains mature
language and themes.

 

Handler is an astonishing play of great theatrical force. Tucked away in
the distant "hollers" of Appalachia is the Holiness Way Church, whose
members take New Testament scripture literally. Dogma commands believers
to "take up serpents." Geordi and his wife, Terri, two members of the
sect, struggle to re-build their marriage after Geordi's release from
prison. One night in service, Geordi handles snakes for the first time
with devastating consequences. What happens to Geordi? Who gets saved?
Who gets forgiven? 

 

Playwright Robert Schenkkan is the author of ten full-length plays.  He
received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1992 for his play The Kentucky
Cycle. This was the first time a play was so honored which had not first
been premiered in New York.  Handler was originally commissioned by the
Intiman Theatre in Seattle and originally produced in 2000 at the Actors
Express in Atlanta.  Schenkkan also wrote the screenplay for the 2002
film The Quiet American.
