The Annual Saroyan Walk, sponsored by the William Saroyan Society, will take
place on April 21, 2007 at 9:30 am. The walk will begin outside the
William Saroyan Theater at the corner of M and Inyo streets. This event is
free to the public.
Members of the Society will be conducting the tour, including Bob Der
Mugrdechian who lived in old Armenian town at the time Saroyan's youth. The
tour consists of 9 sites from Mr. Saroyan's childhood and two sites
commemorating his contributions to Fresno. The tour will begin at the
Saroyan Theater by the Varaz Samuelian sculpture. Commentary on the items
will be provided by the Society.
Also included in the tour will be the site of the Post Telegraph Office.
Delivering telegrams was one of the early jobs held by Mr. Saroyan in Fresno
and became an element in his award winning novel, The Human Comedy. The
walk will conclude with a viewing of the Hoy Trinity Apostolic Church.
The William Saroyan Society is a non-profit, public service organization, in
Fresno, California, home of the Pulitzer prize-winning author and
playwright, and dedicated to promoting the life, times and literary works of
William Saroyan, while educating the public about the human values depicted
in his writing.
