“Something Wicked This Way Comes”

Secrets, betrayal, murder, and magic all come together on stage in a chilling rendition of
William Shakespeare’s
epic tragedy, MACBETH, opening at Fresno State on May 4th.

Set in Scotland during the dark ages, a time when druids and witches prowled and plotted,
MACBETH struggles
with the issue of fate or free will. Macbeth (played by S. Eric Day) is a nobleman serving
faithfully under the
reign of King Duncan (played by Jim Schlievert). One night, after a victorious battle, he is
approached by three
witches (played by Hayley Galbraith, Moira Leslie, and Nicole Arbino) who prophesize his rise
in power, first as
Thane of Cawdor and then as King of Scotland. When the first part of the prophesy comes
true, Macbeth and
his power-hungry, scheming wife (played by Rhiannon Fernandez) take matters into their
own hands, setting in
motion a chain of events that lead them down a path of greed, evil, and despair.

Opposing Macbeth’s rise to power are Malcom (played by Miles Villanueva), the rightful heir
to the throne, and
Macduff (played by Jay Felix), the Thane of Fife, an enemy of Macbeth.

Macbeth was written and produced by Shakespeare in 1606 during the reign of King James I
of England. In the
400 years since its birth, Macbeth has become one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. It
has withstood the
test of time because the issues it deals with (corruption, social chaos, and the thirst for
power) continue to
remain relevant.

Director Edward EmanuEl notes that “The production is a violent one. Evil is violent. The
level of evil that
Macbeth conjures up was designed to shock Shakespeare’s audience. We will attempt to do
the same four
hundred years later”.

Dr. EmanuEl choreographed the complex and pivotal fight sequences;
Jeff Hunter designed the haunting landscape of medieval Scotland; Annalise Baker designed
the gritty period
costumes, and Izzy Einsidler creates ominous and supernatural atmospheric lighting.
