Sunday, September 21 _ 3 p.m.		SERGEI   BABAYAN
Acclaimed for the immediacy, sensitivity, and 
depth of his interpretations, Sergei Babayan's 
performances reveal an emotional intensity and 
bold energy, equipping him to excel in repertoire 
ranging from Rameau to Ligeti. Winner of the 1989 
Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition 
in Cleveland, this Armenian pianist returns to 
Fresno for another display of his "phenomenal 
level of color and imagination" (The American 
Record Guide). This concert is co-sponsored with 
the CSUF Armenian Studies Program.

Friday, October 10 _ 8 p.m.		MARKUS   GROH 
Winner of the prestigious Queen Elizabeth 
International Piano Competition in Brussels in 
1995, Markus Groh has established himself as one 
of Germany's leading pianists of his generation, 
conquering the most prestigious venues worldwide. 
Consistently lauded for his astonishing power and 
sound imagination, he has been praised as "a 
worthy heir to Wilhelm Backhaus, Edwin Fischer, 
and Wilhelm Kempff" (Berliner Morgenpost).


Sunday, November 23 _ 3 p.m.		ANNE-MARIE   McDERMOTT
A luminous, boldly emotive pianist who conveys 
great sensitivity and spirituality through her 
playing, American pianist Anne-Marie McDermott is 
widely celebrated for her expressive performances 
on the world's most illustrious stages. Winner of 
an Avery Fisher Career Development Award and a 
champion of works ranging form Bach to Prokofiev, 
she is recognized for the "love, intelligence, 
and boundless enthusiasm" (Gramophone Magazine) 
in her playing.


Thursday, January 15 _ 8 p.m.		EMANUEL   AX
Emanuel Ax is renowned not only for his poetic 
temperament and unsurpassed virtuosity, but also 
for the exceptional breadth of his performing 
activity. Each season his distinguished career 
includes appearances with major symphony 
orchestras worldwide, recitals in the most 
celebrated concert halls, a variety of chamber 
music collaborations, the commissioning and 
performance of new music, and additions to his 
acclaimed discography on Sony BMG Masterworks.


Tuesday, February 10 _ 8 p.m.		NIKOLAI   LUGANSKY
Nikolai Lugansky, already a major artist, has 
been hailed as the "next" in a line of great 
Russian pianists by his former teacher, the 
renowned pedagogue Tatiana Nikolaeva. He has been 
described as "a pianistic phenomenon of 
exceptional class" (Netherlands' NRC 
Handelsblad), and his "immense technical fluency 
and innate musical quality" (Gramophone Magazine) 
have won him the "Diapason d'Or", the "Preis der 
deutschen Schallplattenkritik", and the 
"Gramophone Editor's Choice".

Friday, March 6 _ 8 p.m.		GABRIELA   MONTERO
Prize winner at the 1995 Chopin International 
Piano Competition in Warsaw, this Venezuelan 
artist's visionary interpretations and unique 
improvisational gift have won her greatest 
acclaim in such prestigious venues as London's 
Wigmore Hall, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., 
Ottawa's National Arts Center, Hamburg's 
Musikhalle, and Cologne's Philharmonie. Gabriela 
Montero's deeply felt and technically brilliant 
improvisations play as important a part in her 
life as they did for Bach and Mozart.

Friday, April 3 _ 8 p.m.		PASCAL   ROGÉ
Pascal Rogé has gained worldwide recognition as a 
master of "subtle gradations of touch, a 
seemingly hammerless sound production, cultivated 
pedaling, rhythmic vitality, and, above all, a 
knowing perception of the composer's intent" (The 
Washington Post). Born in Paris, he exemplifies 
the finest in French pianism and is the winner of 
many prestigious prizes including two Gramophone 
Awards and a Grand Prix du Disque. This concert 
is co-sponsored with L'Alliance Française de 
Fresno.

Sunday, April 26 _ 3 p.m.		GERRE   HANCOCK   (organ)
Organist and Master of Choristers at Saint Thomas 
Church Fifth Avenue in New York City for more 
than thirty years, Gerre Hancock is one of 
America's most highly acclaimed concert organists 
and choral directors. His recordings for Gothic 
Records, Decca/Argo, Koch International, and 
Priory Records reveal an artist of taste, warmth, 
perception, and style. This concert is 
co-sponsored with San Joaquin Valley Chapter, 
American Guild of Organists.


All concerts to be held in the Concert Hall in 
the East Music Building on the campus of 
California State University, Fresno.

Free Parking will be available in Lot C.
