As many of you know, the California voters approved $1 billion in air
quality clean-up dollars in November 2006 as part of the transportation
bond. The allocation of those dollars to the different regions in the state
has been the subject of much debate and negotiation among agency and
legislative leaders. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District,
the region's legislative delegation, and leaders from the California
Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley Air Quality Work Group have been
working diligently during the last year to make sure that as many of those
dollars as possible will come to the San Joaquin Valley. This has been a
very difficult fight!
On Thursday, February 28, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the California Air
Resources Board office (1001 I Street, 2nd Floor, Byron Sher Auditorium,
Sacramento) the Air Resources Board will conduct a hearing and then make a
final decision as to how the first $250 million of Proposition 1B air
quality dollars will be allocated. The allocation of this funding will set
an important precedent for the allocation of the remaining $750 million.
This is an extremely important board meeting and is the kind of meeting that
will be influenced by the number of people who show up from each region.
We are recruiting as many people as possible from the San Joaquin Valley to
attend this hearing. If you are available to attend, please contact Katie
Stevens, Government Affairs Coordinator for the California Partnership of
the San Joaquin Valley, at <mailto:kstevens at csufresno.edu>
kstevens at csufresno.edu. She is helping to coordinate the Valley contingency
that will be making it up for the hearing. Please give every consideration
to attending. It will make a difference!
