[FAC] ArtHop @ Clay Mix tomorrow

Clay Mix is proud to present a solo exhibition by ceramic artist, Susan Clusener from November 6th through December 20th. Clusener applies great skill and craftsmanship to her investigation of natural objects in her surroundings. The exhibition includes ceramic sculptures and wall pieces. The opening reception with the artists is at 5pm on Thursday, November 6th during ArtHop. I hope you can stop by to see beautiful work.



With giant fruit sculptures, Susan Clusener explores color, form and scale. These sculptures are both powerful and playful. In the sculpture entitled "Half Apple", Clusener places tiny apples and a miniature tree within an opening of a two foot wide half sliced apple. A life-sized beetle clinging to the apple's surface completes the piece. She comfortably nestles two pears within a large pear entitled "Pregnant Pear." Her surface treatment is carefully chosen for each work which is not limited to traditional ceramic glaze but also includes paint and wax. In her "Seed Pod" series, Clusener mimics the aspects of sea urchins and chestnut shells that first inspired her unique work. She adds hundreds of meticulously whittled and burnt matches to complete the spiny aspect of the sea urchins. 



Susan Clusener holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics. She currently creates her work at her studio in Nipomo, California and teaches ceramics at Allan Hancock College, Santa Maria.
