The San Joaquin River Parkway Trust Celebrates National Poetry Month
(April)
RIVER ROCK POETRY & MUSIC FESTIVAL
Please join us on April 11, 9:30 to 3:00 as we kick off the 2009
Respite by
the River Reading Series with a day of poetry, live music, art exhibits,
info booths and more.
We will also be hosting two workshops for aspiring
writers from 9:30 to 10:30:
1) THE PROCESS OF CREATIVE WRITING:
(This will be an opportunity to write for an hour within a container of
Mindfulness-in a beautiful place with kindred spirits. Led by Rita
Townsend,
longtime writing workshop leader and local author with a number of
publishing credits, most recently in the anthology from the SUN, The
Mysterious life of the Heart).
2) HOW TO BUILD AN AUTHOR'S PLATFORM
From 10:30 to 11:30, we'll present
3) FROM THE PUBLISHER'S DESK:
In Discussion with Heyday Books Publisher, Malcolm Margolin.
The event will also feature performances by local bands, Pa' Chango,
and The
Hmong Council, with guest appearances by members of local favorites,
40 Watt
Hype, Kemaya, and Mezcal. Spoken Word poets include: David Campos,
G.F.T.D.
1, and the Valley Voices Youth Writer's Club.
The special guest is internationally recognized Puerto Rican poet,
Victor
Hernandez Cruz, who will be reading with local percussionists Richard
Juarez, Aaron Wall, and Carlos Rodriguez.
Mr. Cruz is the recipient of numerous literary awards and honors. He is
credited as a pioneer of the Nuyorican Arts Movement rooted in New
York, and
is the founder of the East Harlem Gut Theater. He is currently
Chancellor
for the Academy of American Poets. His most recent book of poetry, The
Mountain in the Sea (Coffee House Press) received the 2008 International
Griffin Poetry Prize.
This family event is one of many upcoming events and programs at the
River
Parkway that is designed to attract Fresno's beautifully diverse
communities, so that all may come and enjoy the great outdoors at a cost
that is affordable. Please join us, and discover why the San Joaquin
River
Parkway is quickly becoming the place to be!
About: Respite by the River was established in 2002 and has since gone
on to
host well known authors and literary figures such as such as: Gary Soto,
David Mas Masumoto, Philip Levine, and Alex Espinoza, to name but a few.
Event Details: Saturday April 11, 2009. 9:30-3pm. Admission is $5 per
car
