"Bird is a Graduate Student at CSU Fresno. "Private Spaces in Public Spaces" examines roadside altars in a way which is not possible from a vehicle speeding by at 50+ miles per hour. What is installed at Chavez is but a small but important body of work from Bird's masters' portfolio. The work in totality attempts to embody the unique and individualistic way people use public space to memorialize loved ones which have died due to tragic accidents. Some from automobile accidents, others through drowning and heat exhaustion.
In May of 1998, Bird lost her husband in a single vehicle accident. He died as a result of his injuries and the inability of emergency services to reach him due to traffic congestion. She states that, "Most of my work has been an attempt at reconciling this loss and the ugliness of death with the beauty I see all around me. This current series of work is a continuation of my own self-examination as well as a look at how others deal with their own grief and feelings of loss. Roadside altars have become a widespread means of private grief being displayed in a most public of places." "
